Backup is for recovery

Backups are designed to restore systems, files, or datasets after deletion, corruption, or failure. Their value depends on restore testing, version retention, and recovery speed.

Archive is for long retention

Archives store data that may not be active but must be preserved. Archive planning emphasizes retention rules, metadata, integrity checks, and long-term accessibility.

Different risks

A backup that cannot be restored is not useful. An archive with unclear ownership or format risk can also fail. Both need policies, monitoring, and periodic verification.
